Circles
by Elizabeth Challinor
I held you in my eye
Drew a circle around you
You became my world
Like a pretty picture
In a frame
But then
You began to move
The circle was too small
You had to break loose
I watched you stretch your legs
And go
Out into the world
Then came the pain
I’m over here, you cried,
Look, look!
But all I could see was that circle
Empty and wide
I cried
I cried
Until my tears ran dry
Then I looked
And realized
There was a circle
Inside me
It was tiny
Waiting to be filled
Ready to grow
Without you
To embrace the world
