Double-Crested Cormorant
by Elizabeth Challinor
Water rushing
Gushing
Whirling
Through the mill
Sending out foam, flowers
Seagull cries
You lie on the riverbank
Oblivious
Smiling at the butterflies
I spread out my voracious wings
With the deep guttural grunt
Of the double-crested cormorant
Take off into the underworld
Vibrating
Loud and ugly
