Empty, aching feeling

Empty, aching feeling

by Elizabeth Challinor

When that empty, aching feeling invades

The first reaction is to crave

Crisps, chocolates and sweet chewy gums

They'll do the job for a while

Like a plug

When that empty, aching feeling returns

A phone call

Hearing myself express the inexpressable

In the most pitiful way

An out of body experience

I'll wake up the next day and say

"What was that all about?"

When that empty, aching feeling reappears once more

Books, films, series galore!

Other people's lives and words entertain

But it's not the same

When that empty, aching feeling still has the nerve to arrive

That's when I pick up pen and paper

And become my soul's scribe
