Excuse Me

Excuse Me

by Elizabeth Challinor

In the silent presence

Of colleagues

A whispered "excuse me"

Directed at nobody

In particular

A polite lack of response

An empathetic knowing

It could have been me

A prosaic awareness

Of the vulnerability

Of bodies

We cannot always control

A fart

A humbling reminder

Of the not so lofty dimensions

Of our shared humanity
