I Waited

I Waited

by Elizabeth Challinor

Amidst the chattering confusion

I became deaf

Carving out a thin silver line of silence

I reeled it in

And cast it back out

Across the chopping waves

And waited

Not for a fish to bite

But for the tide to go out

For the waters to subside

And reveal the debris

On either side of my silver line of silence
