Lady Fern
by Elizabeth Challinor
I never forgot
My English teacher's words
About Milton's Paradise Lost
Pronounced nearly forty years ago
Comprehension is like a spiral
He said
Keep reading
Don't give up
There are moments you will feel
Like you are going backwards
But you will get there
In the end
Today I found a poem
I wrote
A few years ago
Forgotten
Yet it was all in there!
Now I know
Why his words stayed with me
For so long
I don't grow
U
P
R
I
G
H
T
Like the Italian Cypress
Or the Japanese Cedar
I am the uncurling
