The Last Appointment
by Elizabeth Challinor
He put down his pen
Took a sip of water
Looked her kindly in the eyes
And smiled
All I will prescribe
Is for you to go out there
And do something
Manifestly insane
You are not allowed to care
If people stare
And you must refrain
From justifying it
To anyone
Even to yourself
But you've just justified it for me
She complained
He scratched his head
And picked up his pen
She reached out for the glass of water
And threw it in his face
