The Waiter

The Waiter

by Elizabeth Challinor

Gratitude and Grief

Went out together to eat

And left the waiter standing

Grief was not hungry

Only there

Out of respect, love and care

Gratitude had offered to pay

But it was impossible to order

If Gratitude could not share the meal with her friend

The waiter twitched his moustache

Asking politely if they needed more time to look at the menu

Grief shook her head

Gratitude gave thanks

The waiter flipped a page on the notepad

Pen in hand

Expecting an order

Gratitude smiled

Grief shed a tear

The waiter waited in silence

Outside the restaurant walls

The war raged on
